Access Grant-ed with Lily Marotta – Fri, May 16, 7:00PM
By the late 1990s, the American Mafia had been largely tamed through aggressive prosecution via the RICO Act and had entered a period of cultural indignity. Out were operatic epics like the Godfather trilogy, in were glib spoofs like Analyze This. The Mob was domesticated, less a real threat than a dreary punchline.
Proudly Italian-American comedian Lily Marotta (Celebrity Book Club) returns to Low Cinema for this special, one-night-only screening of yet another powerful Hugh Grant vehicle, one that sees him at the absolute apex of his craft. Grant, a foppish Manhattan art auctioneer, wants to marry public school teacher Jeanne Tripplehorn but first has to charm her highly connected father, James Caan. All Grant has to do to get on dad’s good side is to learn the family business: organized crime.
This 1999 romantic comedy classic featured many of the cast members of the quintessential domestic mobster narrative of the 1990s: The Sopranos. Burt Young, John Ventimiglia, Joseph R. Gannascoli, Vincent Pastore, Tony Sirico, and Aida Turturro all appeared in both the film and the seminal HBO series. Another thing the two works have in common is their extensive New York City location shooting. A short film preceding the feature will highlight some of the locations in The Sopranos. The screening will be followed by a conversation between Marotta and a secret special guest.
