Welcome to Low Cinema
Dir. Nora Ephron, 2009, USA, 123 min.
In 2002, Julie Powell was working at the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation coordinating benefits for the families of 9/11 victims. When the emotional toll of her work became unbearable, she started a food blog as a coping mechanism. That blog would become the ambitious culinary experiment later documented in her book, Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen.
The emotional and practical labor that people like Powell performed is an aspect of the aftermath of 9/11 that found surprisingly little expression in popular culture. Julie & Julia is one of the rare examples that approaches the issue with both frankness and respect, and is also notable for being the first screen adaptation of a blog.
Snacks inspired by Julia Child's classic French recipes will be provided by Ridgewood Kitchen CSA.
Ridgewood Kitchen CSA is a monthly themed subscription service for curated pantry staples, started in 2020 by Lucia Jazayeri and Anna Gelb.
All sales are final; no refunds or exchanges. Five minutes after the listed showtime, any unused tickets will be considered no-shows and released to standby customers.
