In a car-centric culture, the roadway is where many of our daily dramas play out. At first glance, roads are interstitial spaces, engineered to get us from point A to point B. But as our urban agglomerations continue to sprawl, more and more of our waking hours are spent traversing them. How are we to think of this time? Is it up in smoke, or is it just part of the evolving setting of our lives?

For a century now, a civilization-defining battle has been simmering over the question: to whom do the streets belong? Are they a public realm to which we all can—and should—lay equal claim? Or are they primarily the domain of giant machines manufactured by a handful of global conglomerates?

This fall, Low Cinema and Ridgewood Rides will put their heads together to ponder these questions. To guide us through this ethical and technical morass, we will be joined by a panel featuring Kevin LaCherra of Make McGuinness Safe, Zach Wyche of NYC DOT, and Samantha Kattan, candidate for Assembly District 37.

Ridgewood Rides began in 2022 as a small group of friends and neighbors passionate about biking and advocating for safer streets. Since then, it has grown into a vibrant community that organizes group bike rides, hosts bike-centric events, and champions better biking and pedestrian infrastructure in our neighborhoods.
