Crowe at Low

Cameron Crowe, the mind behind such enduring works as Jerry Maguire (1996) and Vanilla Sky (2001), made major contributions to our collective understanding of American music culture. 1992's Singles, while occasionally saccharine, remains one of the authoritative ficitonal portrayals of the Seattle grunge scene, and 2000's Almost Famous offers a concise retrospective of the hard rock era.

Both films can be seen as chapters in the same narrative. Nancy Wilson, who co-wrote many of the songs in Almost Famous, was the rhythm guitarist and second vocalist of Heart, which helped pave the way for later Pacific Northwest acts like Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam — which, in turn, participated directly in the production of Singles.
